BOTOX® Cosmetic Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is BOTOX® Cosmetic?BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein made by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?Facial muscle activity between the eyebrows and around the eyes cause skin wrinkles to form over time. BOTOX® Cosmetic, when directly injected into these muscles, will block nerve transmission and reduce their ability to contract. The reduction of muscle activity will reduce the lines that form and lessen wrinkles. How long does BOTOX® Cosmetic last?Generally, results will last 4-6 months. If you discontinue treatment the areas will gradually return to their pretreatment state. When will I notice a difference in my appearance after treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic?Most people see gradual results in a week or two. Improvement will continue for up to one month. Results will likely last from 4-6 months. Some people may require "touch ups" in areas where muscle activity is stronger and "frown lines" / "wrinkles" are more prominent. Some individuals do not notice improvement after treatment because it is so gradual in nature. In our office we will take "before" and "after" photos, usually a couple of weeks apart, to show the dramatic difference that BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment has made. Click HERE for some before and after photos. Are BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments painful?Pre treatment of the areas with ice packs in our office is common. The cold treatment will "numb" the area for the injections. Discomfort is minimal. Are there any side effects to treatment?Although BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments are minimally invasive, there is a risk of localized treatment effects. These include but are not limited to localized pain/tenderness, swelling, redness, bleeding, bruising and infection. Post treatment headaches are also common. Some temporary nausea and eyelid droop may also occur. Are there any individuals that should not have BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments?Patients with active infections at the planned treatment sites, individuals with known sensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation, and certain neuromuscular disorders (i.e. ALS, Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert Eaton syndrome) may not be candidates for treatment. Will I still look "natural" after treatment?Treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will produce visible results in a few days but will not make radical changes in your facial appearance. The activity in the facial muscles that are causing the "wrinkles and frown lines" is only reduced, not "frozen". You will still be able to maintain facial expression (frown or look surprised) after treatment. How long will my treatment appointment last?In our office we have a consultation to discuss your health history and take "before" photos. We also discuss patient expectations and prepare a treatment plan. The actual treatment time will be 10-15 minutes after all pre-treatment paperwork, photos and consultation (with Dr. Kirk / Tracy Bullard, RN) is completed. |
